London Indian Film Festival: back on the big screen
London Indian Film Festival, 23 June-15 July
This year we are back to the big screen! You can watch the festival in cinemas in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds or on your own sofa, at home, via our digital site www.LoveLIFFatHome.com. Our talks and certain events are also accessible worldwide on our player.
Highlights of this year’s festival include our high-impact Opening Night Gala DoBaara, by star director Aurag Kashyap, a twisted supernatural film helmed by actor Taapsee Pannu. See it at BFI Southbank. Closing night is the super-feel good, Canadian basketball film Super-Fan: Nav Bhatia. Our themed strands in this brochure cover cinema-based and online movie premieres and events. They start with our ‘Young Rebel’strand with UK premieres of a host of talented emerging filmmakers, showing South Asian young people’s real-life challenges and experiences.
For our very popular ‘Great British Asians’ strand we are delighted to UK Premiere the hilarious comedy Little English, plus a live performance on The Story of British Bhangra (at Rich Mix). We honour writer Meera Syal and director Yugesh Walia. At the Barbican, we show a special retrospective of the films of Mumbai activist filmmaker Riyad Wadia. We will be celebrating the 40th production anniversary Attenbourgh’s multi Oscar winner Gandhi (expect special guests), and madcap hit Four Lions with an intro by director Chris Morris, at Roof East Stratford.
India’s greatest woman director Aparna Sen flies in from Kolkata for a very rare ‘In Conversation’ as does her daughter, award-winning actor Konkona Sen. Talented actor-director Nandita Das (tbc) joins the role call of amazing female talent attending, Our ‘Extra- Ordinary Lives’ strand includes immigration film No Lands Man, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Venice hit Once Upon A Time in Calcutta and Pakistani US comedy Americanish.
The festival is also the first to pioneer an ecology strand ‘Save The Planet’ with unforgettable movies like saving Assam’s elephants – Hati Bondhu and power packed No Ground Beneath My Feet from Bangladesh. Of course, we are also showcasing new British Asian talent in some amazing shorts packages. Book early to guarantee a seat!
